Puffins are small seabirds which breed in coastal colonies in the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans. Their numbers have been declining for about half a century, partially due to invasive plant species which are taking over breeding grounds.
Their migratory patterns are currently being studied using geolocator tags by a group from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and is featured in this recent BBC article.
The colouring of puffins always seems so vibrant it’s almost unreal. For some reason I think it’s more striking than rainbow birds in the tropics, because puffins have such a stark environment, they are so splashy in comparison.
saddest scenario: I watched Gordon Ramsey scene where he climbed to a puffin’s cliffside perch, talked to it and then admitted he killed it just afterwards…..
Ack! Gordon Ramsey is certainly an angry sort of person but what on earth does he have against puffins? Do people eat them?
He cooked it and served it. Heck, his children raised turkeys, then they (the turkeys) were on his menu on
the show….
